The Hidden Brush (fall 2024), Restauratieatelier Marjan de Visser is pleased to share with you the link to Larry (Xianrui) Lyu’s documentary. Larry Lyu is a student at the film college of
Loyola Marymount University in the US . During his studies at the
“Akademie für Internationale Bildung ” in Bonn, Germany, he made this documentary.

In this short film (click) we get a good impression of Marjan’s restoration practice and the often strong bond between owners and their works of art.

We see Van Gogh’s famous work
Spring Garden (1884) pass by, but we also catch a glimpse of the paintings Marjan is working on: various portraits, a seascape from the
Hague School period and an abstract work.
Marjan says “The conservator does a good job when his work is invisible”, indicating that a good restoration certainly improves the condition of a painting, but should not attract the viewer’s attention.

Unlike the work of a good restorer, the filmmakers of
The Hidden Brush – director Larry Lyu and cinematographer Diego Hernandez – did not go unnoticed.

At the Akademie für Internationale Bildung they won the “ Best Picture AIB LMU Film ” award for their short film, ‘ The Hidden Brush ‘ which premiered at the Rex Lichtspieltheater in Bonn.
Kudos to Larry, who also presented the screening event at his training in Bonn a few days ago!
